Hardtale is an AU based on Undertale's Hard Mode, although not exactly a continued version of it due to also having changes in the Ruins. In the AU, monsters are much more aggressive and eager to kill Frisk, and fighting is often required to spare them. As such, the AU mainly consists of battle animations. Some new areas also exist, like a prison.

The AU started out as a concept for a Hard Mode Sans fight that takes place in Snowdin, with a Papyrus fight also made before the Ruins events were shown.
